CRS 102- Introduction to Fetishes

"This month's assignment should be interesting. It will allow you to make your assignment a bit more personal and it will benefit you when you're completed, and not just because you should receive a good grade for it," The teacher reaches to a narrow cylindrical sleeve hooked to his belt and draws from it a wooden wand. "Many hexes and curses require an extender in order to reach their full potential. Now don't get the wrong idea about them. Extenders don't actually possess any power of their own. Instead, they work to channel and direct your power. Of course, some extenders work better for different types of magic. It's up to to you to decide what type of extender you will make. Your extender will focus on a certain element that will make it better for certain magic and worse for others. The extender's core will determine its element"

"Extenders are typically shaped to look like wands, but they can be just about any shape you desire including crystal balls, staffs, or jewelry. I'm sure you'll have fun deciding on a shape and crafting your extender, but you need to focus on the important things first," The teacher taps the end of his wand on his desk a few times, then lets go. The wand proceeds to float about a meter above the desk top Haku's enchanted. "Your extender is going to be comprised of two main parts: The core and an attachment. The core can be anything from a piece of a magical creature to a stone with extension properties. This will determine the element it will work best with. The attachment will be a part of you that will bind the extender to you. Other people can use your extender, yes, but it won't work to its full potential as it will for you."

The teacher holds up the wand. It's a rather light colored wood with a dark pattern burned into it. "The core of my extender is a rod of blue aventurine that makes it very good for water related magic. The extender attachment is a strand of my hair. Both of these pieces are in the center of this traditional oakwood wand," He flicks the wand in the direction of a vase sitting on the table. The vase is quickly engulfed by a layer of ice crystals. "I've cursed that vase to sap and freeze the water of anything that touches it, that being the water in the air at the moment. Do yourselves a favor and don't touch it."

"You don't need to use a stone as the core if you would rather use something else. Phoenix feathers are strongly associated with flames and life. Angel feathers are associated with air and spirit. Herbs don't work as well because they can decay in the extender and just don't channel magic very well. If you're a fan of Harry Potter, for your sake, don't try to put dragon heartstrings in your extender. There are only a few dragons on campus and I assure you they won't take to the idea well."

[ Assignment: Make an extender using a magic core (phoenix feather, amethyst, ect.) and something of yours to connect it to you. It doesn't need to be in the shape of a wand. Staffs, jewelry, crystal balls, ect. are fine. Be creative!  ]

CRS 103- Hex Signs

"Okay, now that you've made a sign that's ready for use you need to make sure it's going to be effective. It's not very useful to cast a hex only to have your target simply block or evade it. Take your sign and think about some of the ways one could get around it. For example, if it's a hex of illness you're trying to use on me could I avoid it just by picking up a larkspur flower, a flower used for health and protection? Maybe you could repair that weakness by making it a hex that gives the target a specific type of illness such as a flu. Or you could simply make the hex stronger so it would take a little more than flowers to stop it."

"You're not going to be able to make it perfect, but do the best you can to make it as sturdy as possible. If you think it's already perfect, try using it on someone in the hex protection class."

[ Assignment: Take your hex sign and make improvements to it. If you like it the way it is, use it on someone in the hex protection class. ]

CRS 104- Hex Protection

"A common hex to use is a hex of harming that creates injuries or just brings the target pain. This is usually done through voodoo dolls and poppets, but it can be done through hex signs and rituals like any other hex. These can be countered easily simply by protecting yourself against malicious intentions or purification. I generally prefer purification because that's better coverage from karma hexes as well, but that's just me. Arabic gum or acacia leaves from senegalia or vachellia trees work well for both of those things."

"Horseradish, hyssop, and iris work well for purification. I prefer hyssop and iris for the color."

"Just like we've been doing, I'll be using a hex of pain on each of you at the end of the month, perhaps a chronic migraine or heartburn. Make sure you've found a method of protection by then be it simply carrying a pouch of flowers or using a spell."

[ Assignment: Have your student choose a method of protection to use against Haku's pain hex. Do they succeed or fail? ]

Intermediate Classes:

CRS 202- Ritual Components

"For this final month we'll be doing puncture magic. Puncture magic is usually sympathetic magic like voodoo dolls. It's used to bind a target to a part of your spell. For centuries in the Greco-Roman world, sheets of lead were pierced with nails to bind someone to the curse represented by the lead sheet. The sheets of lead could contain the writing for a curse, the target's name, or contain nothing and the curse would simply be fueled by the casters emotions rather than written language. The nails bound the sheet to the target so the curse would reach them. Please note that the sheets weren't physically nailed to the targets, they were only driven through the sheets to represent binding."

The teacher picked up a lime from his desk and held it in one hand, then picked up a nail and held it in his other hand. "Puncture magic isn't always to simply bind people to curses however. They could also be symbolic in the spell to represent actually piercing something. In Italy, fruits such as lemons and limes were frequently pierced with nails and kept in the house to represent stabbing a witch through the heart to hurt them and keep them away," He jammed the nail into the lime, then picked up a jasmine flower. "Different things could be applied to the nails to change what kind of magic the nail held. For example, applying this jasmine flower to the nail turns the nail into a bringer of love and the lime becomes the heart of the person the caster is looking to woo. Adding cayenne pepper, however, would make the spell very much a malicious one because of cayenne's baneful properties."

"Research puncture magic and choose a spell to use. It should be on someone else, but it doesn't have to be malicious. You can use a positive spell if you want to since puncture magic offers a lot of opportunities for that."

[ Assignment: Have your student perform a spell with puncture magic. ]

CRS 203- Ancient Grimoires

"This class is going to be removed and replaced next term, so enjoy having the last assignment ever for it."

"Chaper 58. Of the Reviving of the Dead, and of Sleeping or Hibernating (wanting victuals) Many Years together."

"I want you to go talk to the necromancy teacher or a student and ask for a demonstration in the art, maybe even take part if you can. Necromancy 202 is busy reanimating dead things. Go ask someone over there."

Tishna (soapiesthorse)-

CRS 204- Ancient Curses

"What makes an ancient curse what is should be obvious. If it's not, either pick up a dictionary or get out of my classroom. Now, ancient curses are a very interesting area of study. Some have been around longer than the pyramids and still affect people today. Others have faded away and are now merely scarred symbols that have yet to be completely scratched away from whatever surface they reside on. These curses and hexes that live on in lead figures are gemstones are just as powerful as they are blind. A person trained in hexing looks at their target and considers the situation very carefully before placing a hex. A surviving hex or curse from the ancient times doesn't do that. It attacks whatever unfortunate soul happens to trigger it like a bear trap. They aren't weakened by a flaw in a ritual or uncertainty, and they can't rebound. As long as whatever's keeping it in tact is still doing its job, the curse or hex strikes with full force each and every time it's triggered, continuing to do this theoretically forever."

"If you've been doing your homework, you've researched and found some of these hexes. You're all here and in one piece, so you either know how to handle these things or just didn't do your work. This month should be more interesting. I want you to either mimic one of these hexes or alter one to personalize it. It can either be the one you found for your previous assignment or you can research another one. If it's supposed to be bound to a place or an object, pick something around the school, place your hex, then leave it somewhere for someone to find. If you want to get really into it, place it over something you want to protect like most of these ancient things were meant to do. It won't be ancient of course seeing as you'll be placing it this year within this month. Feel free to bother the chronomancy teacher about looking into the future for you to see if it actually lasts very long."

[ Assignment: Have your student place a curse on something to protect it. ]

Advanced Classes:

CRS 301- Poppets and Sympathetic Magic

"By now you should know how to create and use a poppet. Now you're going to learn how to properly disassemble and dispose of a poppet you're finished using. You could use an incantation to do this, a clean, very sharp knife to sever the spiritual link, or scrub it under running water. Then you should disassemble it and return the materials to the state they were in before you made the doll. If it's a root or a piece of wood, bury it. If it's clay, grind it back down into powder. For cloth, cut it apart so it no longer resembles a doll."

Mirage (BlueBlueFox)-

CRS 302- Spiritual Entities Used in Hexing

"The final type of hex I want you to learn is the warning hex. It's pretty simple really. Warning curses are sort of like pre-curses. If you suspect someone will attempt to harm you in the future, you can cast a warning curse on them. If they make moves to hurt you, something will hurt them. It's nothing severe like death or losing a limb, but it's just enough to make them consider something other than a stroke of bad luck has befallen them. They may go to a store to buy a knife with which to cut you only to find they're sold out or they forgot their wallet at home. Maybe they'll mix a potion to give you, but can't seem to stop burning it or measuring incorrectly. Perhaps they'll try to start a fire, but burn their hands. Or maybe they're going to leave and betray you only to find their friends are leaving them one by one. The spirits who who you place these types of hexes tend to be a bit more sadistically mischievous, so you don't need to be too tense around them, but do be respectful as always. They can be a bit unpredictable when angered."

CRS 303- Karma Curses

"You've seen the hex of guilt, now it's time to actually get back at someone for wronging you. Anyone who did something bad has karma and it's likely piling up. All the payback curse does is make it catch up to them a little quicker if not all at once. Go find someone living a not so admirable lifestyle and use this curse on them if you wan't it to be very noticeable."

[ Assignment: Have your student use a payback curse on someone. The more karma they have, the harder the karma curse will hit them. ]

CRS 304- Illness Hexes

"This month your goal is to kill someone through a hex of illness. You can either do it through a sickness like meningitis that gradually worsens until your target dies, or you could do it through mental illness such as severe depression that causes them to take their own life. Choose a date on which they will die and manipulate your hex to ensure they die on your planned date. If you want to challenge yourself a little further, choose a specific time for them to die. You have to hex them. It doesn't count if you poison them or do anything other than hex."

"To be a master of hexing is to be able to take control of someone's life and manipulate it as you see fit. If you want them to die, they die. If you want them to suffer, they suffer, and they do it in a fashion of your choosing. Succeeding in this assignment will be the first significant step toward that mastery."

"Try not to look too excited, Pax."
